As Ares was growing up, Zeus was rather negligent. Once during Ares infancy, two giants, known as the Aloadai, kidnapped Ares and put him a giant bronze jar never to release him ever again, Zeus once again paid little attention to it and most of it went right over his head (no surprise there). The Aloadai mother finally noticed, and with the help of Hermes, set him free and was also still alive after several years.
Of course we know that unsafe environment for growing up, being in that bronze jar was not the best thing for Ares. Hera finally took Ares to a safer place for him to grow up. She chose Priapus, another god, and he trained and raised Ares as one of his own which was indeed a very smart idea on Hera's part.

The Difference Between Ares and Athena
Ares only had one adversary, which was of course his sister, Athena. They believe it or not represented different aspects of war itself. Ares was bloodlust, he represented the prime nature of war, its violence, and also it brutality. He fought on instinct and his own rage and personal fury he had, and fought basically for the sake of fighting, so basically you can say he loves to fight and war, hence, the God of War. Athena on the other hand, was probably the smart one on the other side, she was all about wisdom and warfare. Instead of going in and getting the job done as soon as possible, she was all about tactical warfare. Meaning she would plan each and every move carefully and precisely. Now Athena and Ares had a lot of differences, which led to many conflicts arising.
What Ares stood for
Ares stood for bloodshed and war, it seems if there wasn't any going on back then, he would find a way to start it and disobeying Zeus and jumping on board with the war. A huge no no with Zeus.
